Our property development odyssey starts with a thorough assessment of the plans we've been dreaming up from afar over the last two months.

OK, so I cheated a bit. While its true that I was a mild mannered marketing manager in my previous life, I have to admit to a slight advantage over many first time developers my father is a master builder with 35 years experience.
Seemed logical then to get him down from Norfolk as early as possible in the project to discuss our plans; get his opinions on the whats possible, realistic and what our grand designs are likely to cost us. Today we discussed windows - is fitting sealed units to the existing wooden frames feasible? Plus, the possibility of a kitchen diner extension, the en-suite for the master bedroom (which we want to cut out of the enormous second bedroom), the removal of our chimneybreasts (which will be required for the en-suite), oh and our strange toilet in the family bathroom, which is elevated on a plinth such that your feet dont touch the ground - like why?
So we went about inspecting this, checking that. Lifting the boards to check the run for the soil pipe that's always the first thing to consider when planning a new bathroom. Checking the manhole, to see how deep down the drains were - could we get the required fall from the proposed stack to the manhole? That went on pretty much all day and evening and into day two...
