Gazing through new glazing

They've been sat about here for weeks but, at last, I'm getting around to putting in the sealed units, starting with the kitchen first.
So, we got the sealed double-glazing units some time ago now. The supplier wasn't local, but very competitive on price, so we had to have them while his delivery van was in the area. Anyway, I must have moved all 26 units half a dozen times already but, at last, I am moving them into the window frames!

I always expected that fitting these units would be time consuming. That's why initially we decided on uPVC - less work for me. Unfortunately, the uPVC quotes came in at up to £12000 for the house; sealed units were less than £1000. For £10000, we can afford for it to take a while! Anyway, my time expectations proved correct, although I am gaining speed now.

Glazing tape is a godsend - I can highly recommend using this instead of loads of silicone. But, fitting them still means getting the old glass out, then chiselling and routing out the rebate deeper to accommodate the thickness of the unit. Next some of the frames need a little mending here and there.

Once the unit has been tried in the rebate, the frames have to be treated with wood preservative and lined with glazing tape. The external glazing bead must be cut to length and also fitted with glazing tape. After all this, finally the unit can go in, resting on a couple of glazing blocks. Then on with the bead and we're done.

If you're thinking of fitting sealed units into your timber frames, be aware that how you fit them will seriously affect their life expectancy. Do it wrong and you may be doing it all over again in five years. Get it right and replacement may be 15-plus years away. Dont worry, as usual there's lots of advice on the Net - see the sidebar for links.
