The structural engineer - a voice of reason |
|
| The structural engineer's report arrives, finally settling the disagreement about how our chimneystacks need to be supported. |
Two important things happened already this week. Firstly the Structural Engineer's report arrived, proving the Building Control Officer's demands for masses of steel in our loft space are unfounded. It turns out that all is required is 9 x 2 inch wood trimmer laid like a ceiling joist, with a couple of legs coming up to meet the underside of the cut-off stack (see sidebar for a link to the drawings). This answer requires no costly steels or brackets or drilling into the party wall. In the accompanying letter he has instructed me to tell the Council to contact him directly if they have any concerns about his solution. Great! The second big thing to happen was the delivery of the fitted kitchen units and dishwasher on Monday. Hum shame the kitchen looks like a ghetto after a bombing raid. Right now, we have flat-packed kitchen units, plus worktops, pelmet and cornice stacked everywhere. At least the end is in sight re the sealed units. Only three to go! We started removing the floor to ceiling tiling over the weekend. With tiles over tiles and the originals laid on a mortar bed, the room just got a little bigger. Next, there are windows to be bricked up, electrics to be sorted (new wire please), the lead piping to be replaced and walls to be plastered. I think I might go knock the larder wall down now... |
