semi...skimmed

Practice makes perfect and I have had a lot of practice (and panic) skimming over the past few days
Woo-hoo. The skimming is finally finished. It's a love hate thing. When it's going well, I find it quite relaxing and the effect is so immediate and dramatic; from hotchpotch of topcoat, render, bonding and plasterboard to smooth even walls in just over an hour.

Big areas intimidate me, because I know I've got to get it on and trowelled up before the plaster goes off. If you're working alone, often that means mixing up two buckets full at once. That's a lot of plaster to get on reasonably level. Plus you have to wash your bucket and mixing tools up before you can even start. Panic!

Anyway, despite all the panic, the job's all done and went pretty well. Practice makes perfect and I'm starting to get faster and leave fewer blemishes in the final finish. The ceiling was the worst part. You really need to arrange a higher floor level or hire some stilts, like many professionals use. I did the former but had to work around the sink, washing machine and cooker. Not surprisingly, these are the areas that don't look so hot in the cold light of day.

The walls are much better and should require only minimal touching up - mainly with a bit of sandpaper where fallout from the ceiling struck. Next time I will do the ceiling first! The best thing to do is paint the whole room with a watered-down (new plaster is thirsty) white guide coat, to highlight any issues.

I'm taking a day off today - the first in ten - while the plaster dries out properly, before starting to fit the kitchen we've been tripping over for two weeks!
