Kitchen crisis |
|
| Having reached the final hurdle, we realise that one of the two sets of kitchen fitting instructions we have been following is wrong. |
Our Wickes kitchen was supplied with two sets of instructions. One is a booklet that gives a kind of overview, including how and where to fix cupboards, cutting cornice and pelmet and the order tasks should be tackled. The other is a pamphlet that comes with each unit. The booklet turned out to have a mjor error and guess which we've be paying the most attention to? !The booklet tolds us not to worry too much about our decorative ends until after the kitchen is all in. We were under the inpression that our decorative show end panels were screwed onto the kitchen units. Never noticed the little footnote on the unit instructions about substituting the cabinet side for a decorative side where required! So, there we were then, with all the cupboards screwed to the wall and the wrong sides on them. Obviously, I have calmed down a bit since first discovering this and have managed to fix the problem - only took half a day - but what a nightmare. The wallhung units were the worst. Down they came, off came the offending side (this was relatively easy) and on went the new. The problem was the cabinet hangers; they preferred to break rather than be removed from the old sides. Screwfix came to the rescue again. They sell comparable ones in bags of ten for only six quid or so. They were screw-on rather than bash-in models though and the screw holes were very close to the pre-drilled holes for the bash-in originals. Shortened 10mm dowels were tapped into the predrilled holes with plenty of wood glue to fix this weakness. So, that was an unfortunate step back, but we have actually made some progress over the last five days too. The spotlights have been fitted into our new ceiling. Most of the tiles have been fitted for the splash back - I ran out of trim and so had both my local B & Qs! Plus, we have started decorating. The ceiling and the walls have had any imperfections in my plastering filled and two coats of paint. I must confess the ceiling wasn't great, owing to the fact I panicked (and you could see exactly where this happened); the walls were pretty darn good. We've all the annoying bits to do now: cleaning up, fitting bins, painting all our gorgeous period woodwork, making up drawers and puting handles on doors and doors on cabinets. Oh to get this room finished before I lose the will to live! |
